One of greatest things about a sales career is the ability to create your own job out of thin air! I know, I've done it twice!
Most Sales Managers and Business Owners, if approached by someone who impressed them, would give that person a job right now...even if they weren't hiring at that particular moment. It's how I got my first job in radio back in my hometown of Kearney, Nebraska. The second time is an even better story.
I was working as a radio rep here in Tulsa, specializing in recruitment advertising (help wanted ads on the radio) and had approached my current management about expanding my efforts to other markets.
We had just been bought out by a bigger media company and the chain of command had been transferred to Atlanta and nobody wanted to rock the boat so soon after the takeover. So I approached another national radio group, this one just happened to have a senior VP right in Tulsa. I told him about my idea of doing recruitment advertising in several markets from a central location here in Tulsa. He bought what I was selling...which was the creation of my own job. A $72,000 a year job (first year guarantee against commissions) that wasn't in the budget for that year (I approached them in July) but the VP believed in my plan and got excited about the passion I brought to the project.
The number one priority of any business is to SELL their product or service. The owner and managers all get compensated ultimately on sales. You can cut expenses only so far, but there is no cap on sales (revenue). If someone comes along that can help them sell more of their "widgets," then they are going to listen!
You can learn more about landing your "dream job" with a company that isn't actively hiring by downloading a free copy of my book, "The Job Nobody Dreams Of." Happy Selling!
