I just got done watching the last presidential debate tonight, which was a mistake because I knew these guys would just piss me off more than I was before they started. I can't control what the President does, what Congress does or what my state legislature does. What I can control is what I do.
That's why I became a salesperson, to control my own destiny. Whatever happens over the next few months and into 2009 with the economy is basically out of my control. How I respond is totally up to me! I sell IT training and consulting services. Right now the energy companies are pretty darn good clients but oil, as of today, is half the price of what it was a year ago. I'm going to assume that means cutbacks are in the future for these clients.
So I am going to have to work harder and smarter. We have the ability of doing remote training for clients who don't want or have the ability to travel. So now I am going to expand my selling efforts into Dallas, Wichita and other surrounding cities. I am going to partner with other vendors that offer complimentary products and services.
I am going to take control of my future so whoever ends up winning on November 4th...I am covered. Simply put my solution to the crisis is to work my ass off. You have the same opportunity to control your future. If you are in sales, do the same things I am doing. If you are not in sales, look for ways to help your current company do one of two things: expand revenue or cut costs.
I prefer to look for new revenue sources. Normally a company can only cut expenses so far but there is no cap on revenue. Employees that can affect the bottom line will have job security and a future. Even if your current job role isn't related to sales or finance, look for ways to help. Suggest new customers or markets. If you figured out a way to do something cheaper share it with management.
I am not telling you not to be scared or concered about the future. I am telling you that you control the ultimate outcome. Work your rear end off and take this opportunity to shine. I promise you that the leadership you showcase in your job will have a much greater impact on your life than who we elect as the next President.
Happy Selling!
