I went to Toastmasters today and heard some incredible words in a quote from Dale Carnegie, "Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get."
There are actually two lessons in that quote. The first part deals with determination. Wanting something so bad means that you are willing to make sacrifices; show a tenacity that you may not have known was inside you and "will" yourself to the result you want.
The second part I think deals with not making your goal the ultimate factor in your overall happiness. I would have loved to play in the NBA but no matter how hard I worked, it was never going to happen (not my fault - my parents DNA was the culprit). Do I spend the rest of my life a miserable wreck, well yes...at least until the Mavericks win a championship!
Seriously, there is a LOT to be said about not always thinking about tomorrow and what you "hope" will happen. That's the beauty of this quote...the balance between having your destiny in your own hands and learning to live with the outcome and live to fight another day.
Happy Selling!
