In case you didn’t know, I keep busy with three different blogs: IT Training Blog; Dunk Before 50 and this blog. While this blog and the dunk blog certainly deal with motivational topics, I quite often include motivational insights with the email I use each month to promote IT Training Blog.net. With a new year right around the corner and everyone making “New Year’s Resolutions” today’s post is so important I am throwing it up on all three blogs concurrently. First a quick history lesson.
In the Spring of 1519 Hernando Cortes took an expedition to Mexico. After months of travel, his 11 ships and seven hundred men landed in Veracruz. After unloading everything Cortes had the ships burned. He completely eliminated the option of going back. He created an intensely powerful motivation to succeed and that is the point of this motivational tip…don’t give yourself an option to back out of a goal.
My personal example is when I made my goal to dunk a basketball by the time I turn 50 next year. I could have kept that clearly ambitious goal to myself…the same goes for my recent declaration of giving up Pop Tarts. It’s sort of difficult (OK..downright hard) to go back on these two goals that I made so public. There is pain associated with NOT meeting those goals. My recent toe injury (well chronicled at DunkBefore50.com) caused me a lot of grief and it would have been very simple to give up…except I told the whole freaking world about my goal!
Developing reasons for taking actions isn’t always enough to guarantee success (otherwise everyone would always reach their goals). What bridges can you burn in a positive way that will motivate you to stand by your word?
Happy Selling!
Yes I agree with your "Developing reasons for taking actions isn’t always enough". Something inspiring can lead the way in a long process and for maintenance is very ideal.
