While I always preach you can get a job with any company if you just plan your approach correctly (see Chapter 5 of the book) I did come across an interesting list recently published by Selling Power
It listed the "50 Best Companies to Sell For Now." You have to purchase the November/December issue of the magazine to see the entire list but the top ten companies were:
1. Hoffman-La Roche (Health care company)
2. 3M
3. Forest Laboratories
4. Nalco
5. Reynolds and Reynolds
6. Shaw Industries
7. Xerox
8. Ecolab
9. Hilti (North American HQ in Tulsa!)
10. Microsoft
This list came from extensive interviews with sales executives around the country and focuses on companies with at least 500 salespeople. There are obviously tremendous opportunities with firms a lot smaller.
The research for the list is important to note though because they did the same thing I recommend...talk to other salespeople. If you want to know what it's like to work for a particular company take one of their salespeople to lunch or breakfast (or buy them a cup of coffee).
Even if you are looking for a non-sales job, the strategy of talking to current employees is sound. You will uncover some insights on that particular company, it's competitors and the industry as a whole. If you really feel the need to spend money on your research Wet Feet is a great resource.
Happy Selling!
