So you've been forced to look for another job but maybe you need to think about a different job...what's the difference? Another job would be similar to what you have or had. Same industry - same job. There is a great chance (I hope!) that you know who the players are in your city or state. The competitors to your most recent company.
You have the skills to do the job so networking is the focus of your energy. Talk to people (vendors) who sold goods and services to your old company...they might know about openings at competitors. Use online networking tools like Linkedin to reach out to others in your industry.
Think about the three most important contributions you made at your previous employer. Practice telling everyone you know about them until you can effortlessly and confidently fire off that 2 to 3 minute "mini commercial" about why someone should hire you.
Now what if you decide that it's time for "a different job?" A new role in a totally separate industry. Yeah it's scary but you certainly wouldn't be the first person ever to change careers.
Forbes has a slide show on 10 careers that will never go away but assuming you don't want to be a hooker or career criminal what do you do? There are several places online to take career interest quizes, one place is About.com. Once you have an idea of a new field that has captured your interest do the such research I've always preached...get industries magazines; read blogs and talk to people who are currently employed in that field.
Changing jobs or careers is never easy but there are steps you can take to make the journey a little less scary.
Happy Selling!
